Cashiers, NC Weekend

We just spent a wonderful weekend at the High Hampton Inn in Cashiers, NC and while Billie took knitting classes I explored the HHI hiking trails  and some surrounding waterfalls.  Although I didn’t climb Rock Mountain, I took lots of photos of it and marveled at its summit in the clouds and its reflection in the lake outside the hotel.  It was absolutely breathtaking, making for one of the most picturesque scenes I have seen.

My favorite waterfalls in the area is Whitewater Falls which is higher than Niagara Falls (411 ft) and, some say, the highest waterfalls in the Eastern US.  Of course it doesn’t have nearly the volume of water that Niagara has, but it’s still a pretty awesome drop from top to bottom.

Another fascinating falls near Highlands, just down US 64 from Cashiers, is Bridal Veil Falls.  Really small water flow, but it flows over what used to be the highway!  The roadbed has now been located so traffic no longer passes under the falls, but you can still drive under the falls on the original roadbed.
