The alligators are back! We’ve been watching and waiting to see whether the “Do not feed the alligators” signs were real or just marketing hype, and finally we now know. The gators are real, and the warm weather has brought them out to sun beside the two small lakes here in Inverness Village. Last year in January and February it never got warm enough to bring them out, but the string of days in the 70s this week has done the trick.
These two are different sizes, but both are big enough to cause me to give them space. The larger gator is at least eight feet long (maybe longer) and is huge around the middle. The smaller one has an exceptionally long tail compared to its body length, and it is probably six feet in length.
I wonder what the gators do at night? When I go out at night to walk the dogs do I need to watch for gators?
According to my research, they are nocturnal and are out looking for food at night. So, stay away from the water’s edge in the evenings.
